1. ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Air Bed
- Dimensions: 80″ x 56″
- Thickness: 6″
- Weight: 4.12 lbs
- Weight Capacity: 250 lbs
- Packed Size: 15.5″ x 12″ x 4″
- Pump Included: Yes
This is an inflatable sleeping pad for two people, and with its incredible thickness of 6 inches (15 cm), it is almost without a match on the market. So if you are a side sleeper or want the best comfort and cushion in the tent, this is a pad to consider.
You can’t see it from the outside, but inside, you’ll find a supportive coil structure stabilizing the pad. It is constructed of durable yet lightweight and completely PVC-free fabric. The pad has an innovative pump that plugs into a power source (wall or car outlet) or with its internal rechargeable battery. Given the pad’s thickness, you will need the electric pump, which quickly inflates/deflates the pad.
Note that the pad is built in two sizes, the queen size and the twin size, and the former is with dimensions 80 x 56 inches (203 x 142 cm). It weighs 4 lb 12 oz (2.15 kg). You have a convenient carry bag included.
2. Exped AirMat HL Duo Inflatable Sleeping Pad
- Dimensions: 80″ x 56″
- Thickness: 2.76″
- Weight: 4.12 lbs
- Packed Size: 7.9″ x 4.7″
- Pump Included: Yes
This inflatable sleeping pad is built in M and LW sizes; both are light enough to be carried on the trail. The dimensions of the M version are 72 x 41.3/32.3 inches (183 x 105/82 cm); as you can see, the pad is trimmed in the feet area, and it is generally relatively narrow. The M size weighs only 1.54 lb (700 g), so if you want something light to use with your partner, look no further.
It also works as a great solo pad for people who want to have space to sprawl around, and it’s light enough to be used on the trail, even as a solo pad. We have also included it in our double-wide backpacking sleeping pads for two people article.
The mentioned weight is partly due to its thin materials. The top and bottom are made with a 20D polyester, a TPU polyether film laminate, hydrolysis resistant, and Oeko-Tex 100 certified. The temperature rating is 46 °F (8 °C), or in terms of R-value, this is around 1.3. The rating is official ASTM F3340-18.
The packed size is impressive (L x D), 7.9 x 4.7 inches (20 x 12 cm), so you can transport this pad in every possible way. Equally impressive is the 5-year warranty which you have with this pad.
3. Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Insulated Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad
- Dimensions: 77.6″ x 52″
- Thickness: 4″
- Weight: 5 lbs
- Packed Size: 27.6″ x 11.8″
- Pump Included: Yes
The number 10 is in this name because it represents the thickness of the sleeping pad in centimeters. Inside you have an open-cell PU foam Oekotex 100 certified. The sleeping pad will self-inflate; unfold the pad and open the valves. But if this is not enough, a mini pump is included in the package.
The foam insulates you from the floor; well, the air trapped in it insulates you. In any case, you have an R-value roughly equivalent to extreme temperatures of -54 °F (-48 °C).
The dimensions are perfect, you have 77.6 x 52 inches (197 x 132 cm), but this all is reflected in the substantial weight; the pad weighs 163.3 oz (4.63 kg). To continue with numbers, the packed size is 27.6 x 11.8 inches (70 x 30 cm), so this is a car camping pad built for comfort and protection.
Note that the materials are durable and made with 50D polyester and 75D on the bottom. They built the pad in medium and long-wide sizes; the numbers above are for the larger pad. You have a 5-year warranty with this pad.
4. Kelty Tru.Comfort Camp Bed Double-Wide Inflatable Sleeping Pad
- Dimensions: 78″ X 57″
- Thickness: 4.75″
- Weight: 7.13 lbs
- Packed Size: 10″ X 9″ X 18″
- Pump Included: Yes
The sleeping pad you have here is an inflatable pad with a carry bag that doubles as an inflation bag. When you open the carry bag, it will fill with air, and then press it to force the air into the sleeping pad. You repeat this a few times, and it will be ready.
This is a large 2-person sleeping pad; the dimensions are impressive, 78 x 57 inches (198 x 145 cm), so they did not make it narrow to shed the weight. They were also generous when they made it 4.75 inches (12 cm) thick. As you see from the picture, the baffles are transverse; this should reduce the usual bouncing effect.
The weight is not its best feature; it weighs 7 lb 13 oz (3.5 kg), so this is a pad for car camping or motorbike tours; its packed size is 18 x 10 x 9 inches (46 x 25 x 23 cm). But the weight is justified; the fabric is a durable 75D polyester, and there is also a bit of insulation inside, not much really, some 140 grams or so. There should be some R-value, but this cannot be a lot, so this is a pad for the warmer part of the year.
5. KingCamp Luxury 3D Double Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad
- Dimensions: 79.1″ x 50.3″
- Thickness: 3″
- Weight: 10.6 lbs
- Packed Size: 27.6” x 10.4” x 10.4”
- Pump Included: N/A
This KingCamp Luxury 3D Double Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad has an open-cell foam inside, making it self-inflating and insulating. So when you open the valves and unfold the pad, it will suck the air in. These features affect its parameters, so the pad is heavy, weighing 10.6 lb (4.8 kg).
But indeed, the weight is also due to its great size, its dimensions are 79.1 x 50.3 inches (201 x 128 cm), and the pad is 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick. Note also that the packed size (L x D) is 27.6 x 10.4 inches (70.1 x 26.4 cm).
The foam traps air inside, insulating you from the ground; the effective R-value is 4.7, making the pad suitable for all seasons. The top fabric is 30D damp-proof and waterproof at the bottom, far stronger than 150D Oxford polyester.
There is a carry bag included and compression straps. The two valves in the picture are used for inflation and deflation, making it a fast process.
6. Klymit Insulated Double V Pad
- Dimensions: 74″ x 47″
- Thickness: 3″
- Weight: 3.25 lbs
- Packed Size: 12″ x 7″
- Pump Included: Yes
Here you have a celebrated design, an inflatable pad with Klymit’s Body Mapping Technology that includes their patented V-shaped baffles visible in the picture above. They use the same design in their solo and double-wide sleeping pads.
This design also includes what they call the Side Rails, and they are here to provide a secure and comfortable sleep by centering you on the pad while inhibiting air movement when you turn during sleep.
Another important detail here is the Deep Weld patterning that creates expansion zones, allowing your bag to loft beneath you; this is all aimed at improved thermal comfort. With this, you have an effective R-value of 4.4. In terms of temperatures, this is somewhere in the range of 10 to 5 °F (-12 to -15 °C). So the pad is good enough for almost any weather conditions except for really extreme situations.
They claim that an Anti-Microbial Laminate is used in the production; it permeates the inside laminate to inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria. As you probably know, those can cause odors and material damage.
This pad is 74 x 47 inches (188 x 119 cm) and 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick. But see also the weight, which is only 52 oz (1.47 kg), which is remarkable for a 2-person sleeping pad with insulation. The packed size is also great (L x D), 12 x 7 inches (30.5 x 17.8 cm).
7. Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Camper Duo Sleeping Pad
- Dimensions: 77″ x 50″
- Thickness: 3″
- Weight: 4.2 lbs
- Packed Size: 16″ x 6.5″
- Pump Included: Yes
This Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Camper Duo Sleeping Pad is again an inflatable pad. Its independent chambers for two users are a feature that sets it apart from its competitors. You have customized support and a consistent sleeping surface without gaps. This all means that its two halves are inflated independently, so you and your partner can choose how much you want to inflate the pad, and also, when you move on your side, your partner is far less disturbed.
The top fabric is a 75D double diamond polyester, and the bottom is a 75D polyester. So these are durable materials, the pad is built in the US, and they offer a limited lifetime warranty. Their pads are also covered by their Better Sleep Guarantee, meaning you can return them within three months if you are not completely satisfied.
The pad is not insulated but has a thermo-reflective layer that gives it an R-value of 2.2. In terms of temperature, this should be around 36 F (2 C), good enough for 3-season use. The pad weighs 4 lb 2 oz (1.87 kg), and its packed size is great (L x D), 16 x 6.5 inches (38 x 17 cm). So it is very compact and can be transported on a bicycle. As for the size, it measures 77 x 50 inches (196 x 127 cm) and 3 inches (7.6 cm). So this is enough space and cushion for two partners.
How To Choose
So, this is our list of the best double sleeping pads for camping, and we hope you realize how versatile options you have here. Several parameters and features are interrelated and affect each other, and the pads are very different regarding weight, insulation value, etc. It may be challenging to decide which one to pick, so here are a few tips that might help.
Purpose
We guess this is the first thing to consider. If you plan to use the pad for camping only and do not plan to carry it anywhere, then you have much more freedom. In this case, go for comfort. But if you take the pad in your pack or attached to your backpack, consider the weight and packed size. This means as thick as possible and as large as possible.
Weight & Packed Size, Plus Insulation
Note that insulation adds protection, but it also adds weight and bulkiness. These two parameters usually affect each other and are essential if you carry the pad on the trail. In any case, if this is about the trail, go for inflatable pads, and then see if you need insulation.
Insulation
For summer use, you will not need it. Even with air in the sleeping pad, you can have a bit of insulation; this should be in the range of R-value 0.6-0.8. There is a sleeping bag as well, it will not insulate you much when pressed with your body, but everything counts and adds up.
Comfort
This issue can be approached from two points of view. The first is in terms of a pad’s dimensions, thickness, and support. If you are a side sleeper, go for a thicker pad. Also, when you share a pad with your partner, consider the width and the option to inflate the two parts separately; this may be very important in the case of a significant weight difference between you.
The second aspect is protection from the cold; you cannot feel comfortable if the pad does not insulate you from the cold ground. So make sure you know what conditions you will have in the camp or on the trail, and then decide.
