I’ve been riding bicycles on and off-road for years now and wanted to compile a comprehensive list of great products. With this article, I hope to show that hybrid bikes aren’t only for people with a massive budget. There are plenty of great hybrids out there for under $1000. 

As I researched the bicycles, I put together a checklist of elements to search for in a hybrid bike. I’ll go into more detail about them later, but know that each of these ten bicycles has passed my inspection. I highly recommend all of them. 

However, different people favor certain elements of a hybrid bike over others. For those people, I think the Hiland 700C is still a safe bet. The bike does an excellent job of hitting on all essential elements of what you want in a hybrid bike. 

When I was riding it, I was amazed by the product’s efficiency and smoothness compared to its relatively low price tag. I found features and performance excellence in the Hiland 700C that you would expect from top-tier bicycles that cost thousands of dollars. 

On the other hand, each of these products has its pros and cons. Because of that, I decided not to rank the bikes 1-10. Instead, each hybrid bike will receive its own “best of” category. These categories will speak to the specific types of people who would benefit most from the bike. 

As you read through the product reviews, pay attention to the categories and ask yourself, “Which of these bikes is best for me?” It’s essential that whatever product you choose is uniquely suited to your interests, don’t go off my recommendations alone.

I picked this bike as our #1 overall because it’s the kind of hybrid where anyone can immediately sit down and enjoy themselves. In addition, the Hiland 700C requires no technical knowledge of on-road or off-road biking or their complex gear systems. 

Instead, this is the perfect bike for a beginner in the world of hybrid biking. However, it’s also great for experts. I’ve been biking for most of my adult life. During the long rides I took on the Hiland 700C, I never once found myself wishing for a better bike. 

I did find myself complimenting the bike regularly, though. First of all, the gear changing mechanism is straightforward. It operates on the classic 24 gear multiplication system, and shifting triggers never jammed or gave me too much resistance. 

I was also impressed with its down-shifting abilities as this is one area where many hybrid bikes will have some tension or even a misfire. The aluminum frame also makes this bike incredibly light. You’ll be happy to secure it to the back of your car or in your trunk with little strain. 

The front and back brakes perform exceptionally well on the Hiland, bringing the bike to a complete stop as soon as you apply force. Finally, the suspension forks were amazing once I switched to off-road. The bumpy path I took didn’t feel much rougher than the pavement.  

Best 24-Speed Hybrid: Vilano Diverse 3.0 Performance Hybrid

Sometimes, you need to put in a little work upfront to get the best bang for your buck. That’s exactly the case with the Vilano Diverse. I had heard many stories with people spending hours trying to piece together this factory-direct hybrid. That proved to be the case for me too. 

However, it wasn’t that hard—you just have to have the right tools and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Once you piece together all the Vilano’s parts, you’ll get to enjoy a smooth-riding bike customized for your body. I especially enjoyed the flat bar, which helped me maintain better posture when tackling hills.

I think it’s safe to say that most of us have held our breath in the past when we ride in rainy weather, not knowing if the brakes will work as well. So, I took the Vilano out in a downpour to test out its disc brakes. I have to say that they live up to their hype—I felt in control of this hybrid the entire ride.

I especially appreciated the standover style, which was great for chatting with neighbors or acquaintances I passed along the trail. The platform pedals are also nice since they fit just about any sized shoe.

That said, I found the pedals particularly tricky to install (the right one needs to go on clockwise and the left one counterclockwise). So, it’s not a bad idea to bring this hybrid to a bike shop before you use it to ensure you assembled everything correctly.

Best Smooth Ride: 700 C Giordano Brava Hybrid Comfort

The stylish design and lightweight 6061 aluminum frame of Giordano’s Brava are what drew me to this hybrid. And I must say, it didn’t disappoint. One of my favorite aspects of this bike is its alloy crown suspension fork. I intentionally navigated this bike over potholes, and it performed more smoothly than many other bikes I ride.

Although this hybrid can clearly handle more treacherous terrain, it was fun to take it out on joyrides too. It has such a lightweight design that it’s easy to take it in and out of bike racks without lots of embarrassing tugging.

A 24-speed drivetrain seems to be the sweet spot for hybrid bikes. The Brava flawlessly switched between gears, allowing me to climb hills with ease. I also appreciated that it was easy to assemble, leaving me to feel confident as I rode it over challenging terrain.

If you’re the type of person that enjoys having a kickstand, this bike doesn’t come with one. There’s no doubt about it—there were moments when having a kickstand would have come in handy. 

But overall, I didn’t miss it as much as I expected. I think that’s in great part because of how light it is; you can easily lean it against a nearby tree or another object before hopping back on it.

Best Comfort Hybrid: Schwinn GTX Comfort

Comfort is essential for a hybrid bike because it has such a diverse set of uses. Sure, you can use it for road and trail riding, but many people invest in a hybrid for its casual nature. When you’re on a hybrid, you don’t have to worry about being a road bike speedster or a downhill demon.

Instead, most hybrid riders prioritize comfort and convenience over high-performance mechanisms. Especially when bikes are in the mid-level price range, it’s unlikely for a brand to invest in features that go far beyond comfort and accessibility. 

That said, the Schwinn GTX comfort is one of the most comfortable bikes I ever rode. So, recognizing the “comfort” in the name, I decided to take this one on an extra-long ride. After three hours, I returned home and found that my butt did not hurt and my back wasn’t stiff. 

Keep in mind that Schwinn’s comfort relies on its adjustability. While you’re assembling the bike, you have the opportunity to angle and adjust the handlebars so that they’ll match your preferred seat level. 

I also liked the size of the wheels on the Schwinn. The 28-inch diameter is relatively big for a hybrid, but it leads to a smooth ride that makes you feel like you’re cruising in an Escalade. The tires were also exceptional and did a great job absorbing shock and keeping a grip on the ground. 

Best City Hybrid: Vilano City 7-Speed Hybrid

One of the best things about hybrid bikes is that they have a range of styles. The Vilano City bike is just that—a bike best suited for paved and flatter surfaces. However, its seven-gear system with an easy twist grip shifter lets you cruise over small hills.

I put Vilano’s City Hybrid to the test doing just this and was impressed by how easy it was to manage hills. Considering this bike has the sleek appearance of one that should only work well on flat terrain, it was pretty amazing.   

Since this Vilano City bike has a steel frame, I was hesitant about how easy it would be to maneuver on busy city streets. There’s no doubt about it—this bike rides heavier than the aluminum frame hybrids I’ve covered here. Nevertheless, I didn’t find its weight a huge deterrent, especially since I wouldn’t use it on steep hills.

The Vilano City also has a larger size, making it an ideal choice for men. I was surprised by how long it took me to assemble this bike. So, if you don’t have the time, patience, or tools for it, you might be better off letting a bike shop put it together for you.

Once you hop on your new ride, you’ll get to enjoy a comfortable suspension saddle and linear-pull brakes that stop on a dime. It’s also a great bike to use for grocery shopping since it comes with rack eyelets.

Best Hybrid Bike for Women: Sixthreezero EVRYjourney

Bikes for women and men can be completely different or almost the same depending on the brand and model you buy. For some people, the differences are irrelevant, but several features of women’s bikes make them easier and more comfortable to ride.

A forward pedaling design allows women to easily reach their feet on the ground while still offering the standard leg extension on regular bikes. I also liked the extra-wide tires on this hybrid.

The EVRYjourney is a hybrid cruiser, so I found it easiest to ride on flat, paved surfaces. However, because of its wide tires, I was able to manage partially packed sand. So, I especially recommend this bike for females living by the beach.

You’re not going to want to take this bike out on mountainous terrain, but it does a decent job of tackling small hills, thanks to its seven-gear system. Because of the cushioned saddle, ergonomic hand grips, and a handlebar position that ensures you keep an erect posture, it’s an excellent hybrid for women who normally experience knee or back pain when they ride.

The EVRYjourney comes in several color patterns and with classic synthetic leather handles and a saddle. All in all, if you’re a woman who plans on riding your bike in a mostly flat area and are looking for maximum comfort, this hybrid is a strong contender.

Best Lightweight Hybrid Bike: Schwinn Discover

  • Ideal for: Sharing between genders

Most people who use hybrid bikes want a bike that is easy to store when it’s time to do so. Nothing is worse than coming home from a long ride and hauling a cumbersome bike up a set of stairs or into your garage. That’s why I prioritize bikes that are light enough to carry. 

The Schwinn Discover is one of the lightest bikes on this list. It’s easy to carry and won’t require much effort for you to store it. It’s also easy to disassemble, even if you have to do it after every ride. You can detach the wheels easily with a couple of tools. 

The Schwinn alloy frame is the secret behind this bike’s flexibility. The brand’s special metal is perfect for making lightweight bikes and helps absorb shock when riding over rocks or on an unbeaten path. The suspension forks also help to make the ride smoother. 

I was also really impressed by the braking power on this bike. Sometimes light bikes will have weaker brake pads because they have less momentum to stop. I was going down a pretty steep hill with the Schwinn Discover and was able to come to a complete stop after one pump on the brakes. 

Schwinn also made efforts to make the grips of its bike more comfortable. The ergonomic grips are unique because most bicycle brands will only invest in their seats to add to a bike’s comfort. With the Discover, I found myself with a lighter grip and straighter back while riding. 

Best Bullhorn Hybrid Bike: Schwinn Wayfarer

  • Ideal for: Flat terrain

While we had other hybrid cruisers on this list, I found that this one was my favorite with bullhorn grips. When I lived in a city with flatter terrain, I used to love riding bullhorn-style handlebars because they allow you to lounge back while you ride. 

You’ll feel like you’re behind the wheel of a Harley if you drop your seat a little lower. Overall, I found this bike really fun to ride because of the handlebars and the over smoothness of the ride. It became harder once I hit some hills, but it was my favorite for the flat part of the road near my house. 

It seems like Schwinn built this bike mostly for casual riders who don’t plan to use it daily for commuting or running errands. It has storage space on the back wheel, but it’s also only a 7-speed and doesn’t have any suspension forks. 

The feature I liked most was the fenders. It gets pretty rainy where I live, and it’s common for me to come home with big watermarks on my lower back and the sides of my pants. The fenders on the Schwinn Wayfarer redirected the rain perfectly and kept me dry. 

This bike is also pretty flexible in terms of rider size. Its adjustable seat and handlebars make it comfortable for anyone from 64 to 74 inches tall. 

Buying Guide

Now that we’ve identified some of the best hybrid bikes you can buy for under $1000, let’s look at what criteria you should use for your purchase.


The first thing you’ll need to consider is how fast you want your bike to go. Hybrid bikes can range anywhere from 7 to 28 speeds on average, and most of them can easily reach 30 mph. The speed you want should depend on the type of rider you are and the terrain you ride. 

If you live in a city or town with many different inclines, I recommend investing in a bike with more speeds. Depending on the angle of the slope and how much momentum you have, one gear may work better than another, so a lot of options are a good thing to have. 

It’s also important to keep in mind that your bike’s tires’ thickness and weight will affect the speed. Most hybrid tires make you move faster than a road bike because you have a wide surface to develop traction. However, road bikes are also much lighter and therefore quicker. 

Also, keep in mind that a speedy bike might be relatively useless in a city with lots of traffic. For areas like this, you might be better off with a slower bike that’s easier to maneuver. 


The suspension won’t matter much when you’re riding on smooth terrain but will become essential as soon as you leave it. Since hybrid bikes are for versatility, you’ll want a bike that fares well in multiple types of terrain. 

Most of your bike’s suspension and flexibility will come from its frame’s material and the suspension forks attached to the stem and front wheel. Some frames are built from more flexible material than others and won’t be as vulnerable to small bumps and pebbles. 

As far as suspension forks, their presence is all you need to be concerned with for a hybrid. With mountain bikes, the forks are more important because you can adjust their flexibility for rockier surfaces. With a hybrid, you just need basic suspension that will get you over rough patches of sidewalk and through compact trails. 

Seat Comfort

Since you can use hybrid bikes every day, you’ll need a comfortable seat. The last thing you want is for your bike to have a seat that is too small or too hard because it will become painful to sit on after just a few hours of riding. 

However, you’ll also want to be careful about buying big and bulky padded seats because they’ll add to your bike’s weight and make you less shifty. The best is to buy a seat that’s compact and soft but also big enough to fit your bottom.

I recommend measuring your dimensions before selecting a seat, so you know if there’s enough space for you. Also, keep in mind that some seats won’t be waterproof. If you store your bike outside, you should invest in a seat that handles moisture well. 


The two most adjustable parts of a bike are the handlebars and the seat. You want a seat with a long stem, so you can adjust it to your specific height. Having a seat that’s too low will reduce your leg power. On the other hand, having it too high will make it difficult to get on and off your bike.

In addition, having a seat that is too low or too high is bad for your back. Your lower back is especially vulnerable when you ride. It can rock back and forth during pedaling and lead to heavy strain on the spinal cord. 

You’ll also want to be careful with the distance between the seat and your handlebars. If the seat is too far away, it can put additional strain on the lumbar vertebrae. Check your positions, and if you’re experiencing back pain, either move your seat closer or lower.


The most important factor in bike storage is its weight. If you live on the top floor of a building with no elevator, you know what I’m talking about. A heavy bike will slow you down in general, whether you’re trying to put it away or ride up a big hill. 

Buy a lightweight and durable bike, and you won’t experience any problems with storage or speed. 


Now you know that the Hiland 700C is the best bike. It has the perfect combination of speed, suspension, comfort, adjustability, and weight. However, you’d be safe to purchase any of the bicycles I reviewed on this list.
