We were lucky enough to receive a complimentary pair of Silverlight Hiking Shorts and Socks a couple of weeks back. Ralph, the owner of the company, was kind enough to send them to us so that we could take them out for a test hike.

Silverlight hiking apparel elevates the outdoor experience with gear that takes you further. They stand by the quality of their apparel with a lifetime guarantee, offering a replacement or refund if you’re not completely satisfied with their products. And they’re an environmentally responsible manufacturer donating 1% of the sales of their products to 1% For the Planet, a global non-profit supporting positive climate change. These are the kinds of corporate attributes that we here at FunOutdoors want to support, so I was stoked when Ralph agreed to work with us.

Over the weekend, I set out on a 10-mile out-and-back hike in the Southern California hills to try out Silverlight’s Hiking Shorts and Socks. The trail weaves through the SoCal hills, snakes through sunny clearings, and tree-shrouded climbs to reveal vistas that make you feel like you’re on top of the world.

The weather was that perfect kind of warm where you’re working up a sweat, but you’re not worried about dehydration. It was a fair trial for these shorts and socks and I was ready to put them through the paces.

Silverlight Hiking Shorts

Silverlight Hiking Shorts hit the mark on what makes outdoor apparel both comfortable and useful. As I slipped these 7″ shorts on, I was immediately struck by the feel of the material. The outer short is made from a lightweight, ultra-quiet material which I appreciated on my quiet walk through the woods. On the inside, they’ve added silver-threaded undershorts that repel odor and are super smooth against the skin. The inner short isn’t too loose or too tight – providing support without cramping your man parts.

As I set out on the trail, it became pretty clear why these shorts are top-shelf:

  • Odor-free Silverlight® Technology: The silver threads woven through the inner short mean you could probably run a marathon before you even hint at a whiff of eau de hiker.
  • Versatile AF: Whether you’re splashing through a creek, sweating up a storm at the gym, or just chillin’ at the campsite, these shorts are up for it all.
  • Ample Pocket Space: Two large pockets and a strategic phone pocket on the back – because, let’s face it, you need somewhere to stash your smartphone for that summit selfie.
  • Eco-Friendly Vibes: Made with 92% Recycled Polyester and 8% Spandex, these are shorts Mother Nature would high-five you for wearing.
  • Durability to Outlast: Engineered with resilience and backed by a lifetime guarantee, these shorts dare you to push the boundaries.

Look, I’ve worn dozens of athletic shorts on the trail. Some multi-purpose, some meant specifically for hiking. These shorts balance versatility with functionality in a way that makes them stand out in a pretty crowded category.

But what do the actual wearers think? Reviews pour in with kudos on the shorts’ comfort and durability. There’s some chatter about wanting more color options and perhaps a longer cut for taller trail hikers. Customers also note the bulky drawstring, and the higher price-point ($78 USD), but the consensus? These shorts are straight-adored by nearly every customer who reviewed them.

As for me, these Silverlight shorts are a solid pick for any active endeavor. They’re snug enough for a sprint, comfy for the gym, and ready for any trail you tackle. I reckon they’ll be seeing a lot of action in my outdoor gear line-up.

Silverlight Hiking Socks

Let’s talk about socks…

I’ve always been a bit of a Goldilocks when it comes to socks – they can’t be too thick, or too thin, and DEFINITELY can’t rub me the wrong way. So, I was a bit skeptical when I slipped these Silverlights on for the day.

Right out of the gate, these socks felt like a secret weapon. Medium weight and made for the best part of the hiking season (we’re talking spring through fall), they hugged my feet with a smooth compression that gave me comfort and support with every step. The mid-foot rib added an extra layer of compression in the upper arch without feeling bulky.

After putting these socks through the paces, my feet were completely dry there wasn’t the standard musty funk that hits you when you peel off your hiking shoes. And that callus on my heel that’s been my loyal hiking companion for years? These socks told it to take a hike.

Let’s break down what made these Silverlight socks my new trail companions:

  • Silverlight® Technology: These threads are like the ninja warriors of the sock world. Silver-infused and ready to fend off any nasty odors until, like, the end of time since the silver never washes out.
  • Blister-Busting Goodness: No one likes a blister crasher at their hiking party. These socks are armed with fast-drying powers and a stay-put fit that shields you against a hiker’s worst enemy.
  • Tree-Hugger Approved: They donate 1% of their revenue to reforestation. So, not only are my feet happy, but my inner eco-warrior can fight another day.
  • Tough as Nails: I took ’em through the wringer, and they came out unscathed. If durability had a face, it’d be Silverlight socks.

Now, look, the true test of these socks is their durability. One 10-mile trek isn’t going to allow me to tick the durability box. And while I don’t need my hiking socks to follow me to the grave, I do want them to last several seasons.

That said, I read through dozens of customer reviews on the Silverlight website, and customers tell tales of treks from the lush trails of New Zealand to the dizzying heights of the Himalayas with these socks on their feet. Whether it’s daily wear or sporadic hikes, Silverlight customers are reporting a lifespan of 4+ years! I mean, we’re talking about a sock that gets more applause for endurance than a marathon runner at the finish line.

For all their merits, even the sturdiest of gear has its Achilles’ heel, and Silverlight socks are no exception. Some trekkers have mentioned that the robust build comes with a bit of bulk, making them a snug fit in tighter shoes. I wear my hiking shoes a wee-bit loose, so this wasn’t an issue for me. It’s at the top of the price point for hiking socks ($34 USD), but the value is totally there. At the end of the day, even the best gear has its nuances, and Silverlight socks, while close to magical, aren’t a one-size-fits-all miracle – but they’re not far off.

But, like the hiking shorts – and all of Silverlight’s products – these socks come with the same lifetime guarantee. That kind of peace of mind is hard to find with most outdoor gear. For me, it’s a HUGE draw.

So, if your sock drawer is a revolving door of short-lived pairs, it might be time for an upgrade to Silverlight – the sock that sticks around long enough to become part of the family album.

Wrapping it up

Wrapping up this trek through the world of Silverlight’s outdoor gear, it’s clear these shorts and socks exceeded expectations. It’s a good sign when the first hike with new gear ends with zero complaints and a desire to wear them on the next outing.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual explorer, Silverlight’s apparel can elevate the hiking experience without overshadowing the journey. It’s gear made by adventurers, for adventurers, and custom-built to withstand the tests of trails and time, so that you can focus on the path ahead and the memories you create along the way.

Happy trails!
