Choosing a Tent with a Hinged Door System

If you need a tent with a hinged door system, most likely you will end up buying one of Coleman tents. This brand is best known for such a design, and here you have my selection of them.

What is a hinged tent door?

Since you are here, you probably know this is about tents that have doors with removable poles that you can put into zippered sleeves on the perimeter of the door. There are also Velcro tabs in place that keep the door closed, and you always have a handle as well.

But even such hinged doors have the usual zipper to close the door when necessary. The whole idea is that do not have to wrestle with a zipper every time when you get in or out of the tent.

The mentioned poles make a frame so the door is stiff and it is easy to open it and close, you can realize this from the top picture above. Coleman builds such hinged door tents in a variety of shapes, so you can chose among cabin style, tunnel type, and dome tents. Some of them are with blackout (dark rest) inner, and you will also see some that are instant type.

As of the moment of writing this text, there are only one or two brands other than Coleman with such a hinged door design.

1. Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Screened Tent

This Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Screened Tent is the smaller in the series of two tents built in the same style, the larger is a 10-person tent. So this is a tunnel-type tent but its side leg poles are straight so it looks almost like a cabin tent. The hinged door is visible in the picture.

The structure has two different parts, a floorless screen room on the right in the picture and another more enclosed room on the left. The latter area is with a removable divider so you have two rooms plus the screen room.

The tent is pleasant with many windows around, it is non-freestanding, and I see it suitable for 2-3 seasons. You will want to know that it is incredibly popular and affordable.

The official capacity is 6 people and for this you have the floored area of 99 ft² (9.2 m²). But the screen room adds 54 ft² (5 m²). The peak height is 80 inches (203 cm). The weight is 32 lb (14.5 kg) and the packed size is (L x D) 41 x 10 inches (104 x 25 cm).

2. Coleman Montana 8 Person Tent

The focus of this text is on the 8-person version, but they have yet another smaller Coleman Montana 6 person tent with the same features, except one. So this is one of the most popular family camping tents on the market. It has been among Amazon bestsellers for years already.

It can be described as an extended dome tent, so you have a central part under the dome and two extensions on the sides supported with one loop each. There are 3 windows and one door, and this door is a hinged door. The mentioned 6-person tent is with the usual zippered door.

You also have an E-port for electrical power inside the tent. They have added an extra pole on the front which supports an awning, so you have a dry entry here which is very convenient.

The fabric is a 450 mm fire retardant polyester with their usual WeatherTec system and Polyguard fabric. This implies inverted seams. The floor is a very durable 1000D polyethylene and it is bathtub style, with welded corner seams.

It is here in the list because of its hinged door which you see in the picture. Dome-type tents with such a door are truly rare. In view of its shape, it is quite aerodynamic and low profile. It is supported by simple fiberglass poles, and it comes also with two shorter ones that create small brims on the front and on the back, so you have a dry entry.

One specific feature here is its LED light system. This means you have overhead light and a wall switch that allows you to select between high, low and nightlight modes. The system is CPX 6 compatible and it is powered by an included battery cartridge with 4 D-batteries. You will have 100, 42, and 5 lumens at high, low, and nightlight modes. The corresponding runtime for the three levels are 26, 65, and 81 hours.

There is an e-port, and the windows on the doors are two-layer with mesh and panels. Here are a few more numbers. The weight is 20 lb (9.1 kg), the base size is 12 x 10 ft (366 x 305 cm), and the packed size is 30 x 11 x 8 inches (76 x 28 x 20 cm).

4. Coleman Cabin Tent with Instant Setup 10 Person

This tent is something special, it is an instant tent with a hinged door, and as you realize from the picture this is an instant cabin tent with a hinged door. Related to its instant construction, this means that the frame is pre-attached to the tent and you have telescopic poles.

So although the tent is large, one person can set it up with ease in just a few minutes. In fact, the official setup time is 60 seconds. This is why it is also in my list of best 10 person instant tents for camping.

As for the cabin style, you realize it is with straight and tall walls. The peak height is great 79 inches (201 cm) so you have a stand up height everywhere. But it is here because of its doors, it has two of them and one of them is a hinged door.

One extra feature is its dark rest design. They claim that it reflects 90% of the sunlight. For this reason, I have included it in my list of Coleman dark rest tents. The tent has a partial-coverage fly that attaches to the legs. This is why it is also fully freestanding.

As for the capacity, it is officially for 10 people and it offers an area of 140 ft² (13 m²). The packed size is 42 x 9 x 9 inches (107 x 23 x 23 cm).

I see it best suited for summer camping and for calm weather conditions, though they claim it can withstand winds over 35 mph.

Final thoughts

So this was my selection of tents with a hinged door system, and you have several completely different designs that all have one common feature and this is the hinged door.

In terms of capacity, these tents are usually a bit small for what the manufacturer gives as an official capacity, so it is best to downgrade the number of users.

I would not make a comparison between them because they are so different, but the tent below is my choice tent.
